Color is such an important component of cinematography that it gets its own section. Here are some great studies on how filmmakers have used color to tell richer stories. Having a well-rounded cinematic education is important if you want to truly be a master at your craft. Learning about the history of the art form is a great place to start, so here are several video essays that will give you a basic introduction, from early influential filmmakers like Charlie Chaplin to different film movements that came to prominence throughout the years. “Sixteen Candles clearly is evident. Criterion really needs some John Hughes films.” Main Stacks Main Stacks The waves of post-war immigration are charted in the stories told both by a dominant (and frequently repressive) televisual narrative and, importantly, by migrants themselves. Interviews mingle with voiceover, music accompanies the machines that the Windrush generation work at. But there are no definitive answers here pay to write thesis, only, as the Black Audio Film Collective memorably suggests essay writing service in australia, “the ghosts of songs”. Beyond Marker’s personal interest in and inheritance from the Soviet masters, classical montage laid the foundations of the essay film most pertinently in its foregrounding of the presence, within the fabric of the film, of a directing intelligence. Conducting their experiments in film not through ‘pure’ abstraction but through narrative, the montagists made manifest at least two operative levels within the film: the narrative itself and the arrangement of that narrative by which the deeper structures that move it are made legible. Against the seamless, immersive illusionism of commercial cinema, montage was a key for decrypting those social forces, both overt and hidden, that govern human society. The overwhelming fact remains that the great majority of those who drew upon the Soviet montagists for explicitly ideological ends (as opposed to Hollywood’s opportunistic swipings) resided on the left of the spectrum – and, in the montagists’ most notable successor in the period immediately following, retained their alignment with and inextricability from the state. It is crucial to note that the ‘essay film’ is not only a post-facto appellation for a kind of film practice that had not bothered to mark itself with a moniker, but also an invention and an intervention. While it has acquired its own set of canonical ‘texts’ that include the collected works of Marker example of writing an opinion essay, much of Godard – from the missive (the 52-minute Letter to Jane. 1972) to the massive (Histoire(s) de cinéma. 1988-98) – Welles’s F for Fake (1973) and Thom Andersen’s Los Angeles Plays Itself (2003), it has also poached on the territory of other, ‘sovereign’ forms, expanding its purview in accordance with the whims of its missionaries. As they negotiate the camera’s gaze and provide the soundtrack by singing, stamping and wheeling a barrow, the lepers are co-authors of the film. Farrokhzad echoes their prayers, heard and seen on screen, with her voiceover, which collages religious texts, beginning with the passage from Psalm 55 famously set to music by Mendelssohn (“O for the wings of a dove”). No less than the mystics, however, the montagists were after essences. Eisenstein. Dziga Vertov and Pudovkin. along with their transnational associates and acolytes, sought to crystallise abstract concepts in the direct and purposeful juxtaposition of forceful good topics college history research papers, hard-edged images – the general made powerfully essay on university life, viscerally immediate in the particular. Here find my resume, says Eisenstein, in the umbrella-wielding harpies who set upon the revolutionaries in October (1928), is bourgeois Reaction made manifest; here, in the serried ranks of soldiers proceeding as one down the Odessa Steps in Battleship Potemkin (1925), is Oppression undisguised; here, in the condemned Potemkin sailor who wins over his imminent executioners with a cry of “Brothers!” – a moment powerfully invoked by Marker at the beginning of his magnum opus A Grin Without a Cat (1977) – is Solidarity emergent and, from it, the seeds of Revolution. (Khaneh siah ast) Forough Farrokhzad, 1963 Alain Resnais, 1956 Le camera stylo? Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera (1929) Within the confines of the Ministry of Information’s remit – to lift the spirits of a battle-weary nation – and the loose narrative framework of Timothy’s first six months, Jennings finds ample expression for the kind of formal experiment that sets his work apart from that of other contemporary documentarians. He worked across film, painting, photography, theatrical design, journalism and poetry; in Diary his protean spirit finds expression in a manner that transgresses the conventional parameters of wartime propaganda, stretching into film poem, philosophical reflection, social document, surrealistic ethnographic observation and impressionistic symphony. Managing to keep to the right side of sentimentality, it still makes for potent viewing. It’s also an inspired semiological reading of a media image and a reckoning with the contradictions of celebrity activism. Godard and Gorin examine the image’s framing and camera angle and ask why Fonda is the ‘star’ of the photograph while the Vietnamese themselves remain faceless or out of focus? And what of her expression of compassionate concern? This “expression of an expression” they trace back, via an elaboration of the Kuleshov effect. through other famous faces – Henry Fonda. John Wayne. Lillian Gish and Falconetti – concluding that it allows for “no reverse shot” and serves only to bolster Western “good conscience”. One of the attractions that drew early film pioneers out west, besides the sunlight and the industrial freedom, was the versatility of the southern Californian landscape: with sea, snowy mountains, desert, fruit groves, Spanish missions, an urban downtown and suburban boulevards all within a 100-mile radius, the Los Angeles basin quickly and famously became a kind of giant open-air film studio, available and pliant. Resnais explores the workings of the library through the effective device of following a book from arrival and cataloguing to its delivery to a reader (the book itself being something of an in-joke: a mocked-up travel guide to Mars in the Petite Planète series Marker was then editing for Editions du Seuil). With Resnais’s probing, mobile camerawork and a commentary by French writer Remo Forlani, Toute la mémoire du monde transforms the library into a mysterious labyrinth, something between an edifice and an organism: part brain and part tomb.
As we hear of Shōnagon’s “list of elegant things, distressing things, even of things not worth doing”, we watch images of a missile being launched and a hovering bomber. What’s the connection? There is none. Nothing here fixes word and image in illustrative lockstep; it’s in the space between them that Sans soleil makes room for the spectator to drift, dream and think – to inimitable effect. The relentlessly unidirectional focus of classical Soviet montage puts it methodologically and temperamentally at odds with the ruminative, digressive and playful qualities we associate with the essay film. So, too, the former’s fierce ideological certainty and cadre spirit contrast with that free play of the mind write an essay about mothers day, the Montaigne -inspired meanderings of individual intelligence lord of the flies essays, that so characterise our image of the latter. At the dawn of the cinematic century, the American writer Henry Adams saw in the dynamo both the expression of human mastery over nature and a conduit to mysterious, elemental powers beyond our comprehension. So, too, the modernist ambition expressed in literature, painting, architecture and cinema to capture a subject from all angles – to exhaust its wealth of surfaces, meanings, implications, resonances – collides with awe (or fear) before a plenitude that can never be encompassed.
Night Mail (1936) Appropriately, it is at this moment that the emphasis of the essay film begins to shift away from tactile presence – the whirl of the city, the rhythm of the rain, the workings of industry – to felt absence. The montagists had marvelled at the workings of human creations which raced ahead irrespective of human efforts; here, the systems created by humanity to master the world write, in their very functioning, an epitaph for those things extinguished in the act of mastering them. The African masks preserved in the Musée de l’Homme in Les statues meurent aussi speak of a bloody legacy of vanquished and conquered civilisations; the labyrinthine archival complex of the Bibliothèque Nationale in the sardonically titled Toute la mémoire du monde (1956) sparks a disquisition on all that is forgotten in the act of cataloguing knowledge; the miracle of modern plastics saluted in the witty, industrially commissioned Le Chant du styrène (1958) regresses backwards to its homely beginnings; in Night and Fog an unprecedentedly enormous effort of human organisation marshals itself to actively produce a dreadful, previously unimaginable nullity. Humphrey Jennings, 1945 Orson Welles, 1973 “You never know what you may be filming free scholarships essays examples,” notes one of Marker’s narrating surrogates in A Grin Without a Cat, as footage of the Chilean equestrian team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics offers a glimpse of a future member of the Pinochet junta. The image and sound captured at the time of filming offer one facet of reality; it is only with this lateral move outside that reality that the future reality it conceals can speak. The subjectivity and speculative approach maintained throughout are more akin to the essay tradition than traditional propaganda in their rejection of mere glib conveyance of information or thunderous hectoring. Instead Jennings invites us quietly to observe the nuances of everyday life as Britain enters the final chapter of the war. Against the momentous political backdrop, otherwise routine, everyday activities are ascribed new profundity as the Welsh miner Geronwy, Alan the farmer, Bill the railway engineer and Peter the convalescent fighter pilot go about their daily business. Few documentaries have achieved the cult status of the 22-minute A propos de Nice, co-directed by Jean Vigo and cameraman Boris Kaufman at the beginning of their careers. The film retains a spontaneous, apparently haphazard, quality yet its careful montage combines a strong realist drive, lyrical dashes – helped by Marc Perrone’s accordion music – and a clear political agenda. Midway on their Marxian mission to change the world rather than interpret it, the montagists actively made the world even as they revealed it. In doing so they powerfully expressed the dialectic between control and chaos that would come to be not only one of the chief motors of the essay film but the crux of modernity itself. We know how birth works; how to behave in kindergarten; how to chat up girls, boys or whatever we fancy (for we’re liberal-minded, if only in principle); how to look for a job and maybe live without finding one; how to wiggle our arses in the hottest way possible when we pole-dance, or manage a hostage crisis without things getting (too) bloody. Whatever job we do, we know it by heart; we also know how to manage whatever kind of psychological breakdown we experience; and we are also prepared for the end, and even have an idea about how our burial will go. This is the nation: one of fearful people in dire need of control over their one chance of getting it right. Here, claimed Bazin, “a given image doesn’t refer to the one that preceded it or the one that will follow, but rather it refers laterally, in some way, to what is said.” Thus the very thing which makes Letter “extraordinary” paper for dissertation, in Bazin’s estimation, is also what makes it not-cinema. Looking for a term to describe it, Bazin hit upon a prophetic turn of phrase, writing that Marker’s film is, “to borrow Jean Vigo’s formulation of À propos de Nice (‘a documentary point of view’), an essay documented by film. The important word is ‘essay’, understood in the same sense that it has in literature – an essay at once historical and political, written by a poet as well.” In recent years the essay film has attained widespread recognition as a particular category of film practice, with its own history and canonical figures and texts. In tandem with a major season throughout August at London’s BFI Southbank, Sight & Sound explores the characteristics that have come to define this most elastic of forms and looks in detail at a dozen influential milestone essay films.
Las Hurdes (1933) Before the House of Makhmalbaf there was The House is Black. Called “the greatest of all Iranian films” by critic Jonathan Rosenbaum, who helped translate the subtitles from Farsi into English, this 20-minute black-and-white essay film by feminist poet Farrokhzad was shot in a leper colony near Tabriz in northern Iran and has been heralded as the touchstone of the Iranian New Wave. It is, of course, with the seminal post-war collaborations between Marker and Alain Resnais that the essay film proper emerges. In contrast to the striving culture-snobbery of the Griersonian documentary, the Resnais-Marker collaborations (and the Resnais solo documentary shorts that preceded them) inaugurate a blithe, seemingly effortless dialogue between cinema and the other arts in both their subjects (painting, sculpture) and their assorted creative personnel (writers Paul Éluard. Jean Cayrol. Raymond Queneau. composers Darius Milhaud and Hanns Eisler ). This also marks the point where the revolutionary line of the Soviets and the soft, statist liberalism of the British documentarians give way to a more free-floating but staunchly oppositional leftism, one derived as much from a spirit of humanistic inquiry as from ideological affiliation. An essay film avant la lettre. A propos de Nice ends on Soviet-style workers’ faces and burning furnaces. The message is clear, even if it has not been heeded by history. A Diary for Timothy takes the form of a journal addressed to the eponymous Timothy James Jenkins, born on 3 September 1944, exactly five years after Britain’s entry into World War II. The narrator, Michael Redgrave. a benevolent offscreen presence, informs young Timothy about the momentous events since his birth and later advises that, even when the war is over, there will be “everyday danger”. As a result we were treated to topical and touching essays like Candice Drouet’s Rainbow Flag of Film: A Tribute to LGBTQ Cinema released mere days after the tragedy at Pulse in Orlando, and Nelson Carvajal’s Wake Up: Spike Lee’s Vital Chi-Raq in which the Chicago native explores the real-world issues at the heart of Lee’s film, as well as its reception by citizens of the Windy City who live the film every day.

For the first body paragraph you should use your strongest argument or most significant example unless some other more obvious beginning point (as in the case of chronological explanations) is required. The first sentence of this paragraph should be the topic sentence of the paragraph that directly relates to the examples listed in the mini-outline of introductory paragraph. Here is an example of a body paragraph to continue the essay begun above: Hopefully this example not only provides another example of an effective body paragraph but also illustrates how transitional phrases can be used to distinguish between them. Although the conclusion paragraph comes at the end of your essay it should not be seen as an afterthought. As the final paragraph is represents your last chance to make your case and, as such, should follow an extremely rigid format. A one sentence body paragraph that simply cites the example of "George Washington" or "LeBron James" is not enough, however. No, following this an effective essay will follow up on this topic sentence by explaining to the reader, in detail, who or what an example is and, more importantly, why that example is relevant. Here, by way of example, is an introductory paragraph to an essay in response to the following question: Finally, designing the last sentence in this way has the added benefit of seamlessly moving the reader to the first paragraph of the body of the paper. In this way we can see that the basic introduction does not need to be much more than three or four sentences in length. If yours is much longer you might want to consider editing it down a bit! Effective conclusions open with a concluding transition ("in conclusion," "in the end," etc.) and an allusion to the "hook" used in the introductory paragraph. After that you should immediately provide a restatement of your thesis statement. Though it may seem formulaic – and, well, it is - the idea behind this structure is to make it easier for the reader to navigate the ideas put forth in an essay. You see, if your essay has the same structure as every other one, any reader should be able to quickly and easily find the information most relevant to them. Having done that, you then need to explain exactly why this example proves your thesis. The importance of this step cannot be understated (although it clearly can be underlined); this is how to write an essay sample, after all, the whole reason you are providing the example in the first place. Seal the deal by directly stating why this example is relevant. Want to see sample essays? The conclusion paragraph can be a difficult paragraph to write effectively but, as it is your last chance to convince or otherwise impress the reader, it is worth investing some time in. Take this opportunity to restate your thesis with confidence; if you present your argument as "obvious" then the reader might just do the same. Though more advanced academic papers are a category all their own, the basic high school or college essay has the following standardized, five paragraph structure: Johnson, V. (1981). As Bell and Zajdow (1997) point out, in the past, single parent and step families were more common than is assumed - although the disruptive influence then was not divorce, but the premature death of one or both parents. This situation suggests that in studying the modern family, one needs to employ a historical perspective, including the possibility of looking to the past in searching for ways of dealing with problems in the present. It is difficult to offer a comprehensive explanation for the growing trend of marital breakdown; and it is even more difficult to find solutions that might ameliorate the problems created by it. Clearly though, as I have argued in this essay, the most useful answers are to be found not within a narrow legal framework, but within a broader socio-economic one. An important issue for sociologists, and indeed for all of society, is why these changes in marital patterns have occurred. In this essay I will seek to critically examine a number of sociological explanations for the 'divorce phenomenon' and also consider the social policy implications that each explanation carries with it. It will be argued that the best explanations are to be found within a broad socio-economic framework. In the first sentence of the second paragraph (first paragraph of the body) the words "sense" and "manipulation" are used to hook into the end of the introductory paragraph. The first part of the second sentence provides the topic for this paragraph--imagery in a static scene. Then a quotation from "The Tell-Tale Heart" is presented and briefly discussed. The last sentence of this paragraph uses the expressions "sense of feeling" and "sense of sight" as hooks for leading into the third paragraph. 1 The sense of sight, the primary sense, is particularly susceptible to manipulation. 2 In "The Tell-Tale Heart," Poe uses the following image to describe a static scene: "His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness. " Poe used the words "black," "pitch how to start writing a dissertation," and "thick darkness" not only to show the reader the condition of the old man's room, but also to make the reader feel the darkness." 3 "Thick" is a word that is not usually associated with color (darkness), yet in using it creative writing for the internet, Poe stimulates the reader's sense of feeling as well as his sense of sight. Capacity is how well someone is able to pay back the debts they owe. Character is personal characteristics including their trustworthiness. Credit cards work to make attractive revenues to credit card companies, banks and retail sales. Nowadays, credit cards have such high interest that they are no longer attractive to purchases the unnecessary items. Credit cards are primarily seems to be used on important events to avoid indebtedness. For example, one can take a month long trip to a vacation spot with a friend with the facility of the entire expenses being charged on the credit card. Most people, especially the new generation, view credit cards not as a loan from the bank, but as extra income. A credit limit of? 50,000 are often understood to mean that the person has? 50,000 to spend. It is perfectly possible to live a happy life without credit cards. They are not a requirement. It seems as if thinking has developed that we must have credit cards. However, the reality is that the practices of credit card issuers can be harsh on individuals. More and more people are stopping use of credit cards, after a bad experience with them. While the banks and authorities grapple with theft and fraud write my paper me, it is not just these conmen and tricksters that people need to be careful about. People are duped in by offering a zero per cent interest card, only to be charged interest after the first few months. Then there is the common occurrence of a sudden increase in the interest rate, with no forewarning. These cards also allow people to go on a shopping binge, promoted by motivators as the best way to fight depression. And rural India, too, is not far behind in this case. Thus, Indians, who used to shun being in debt at one time, are enjoying it at the moment. It seems that they have allowed credit cards to run their lives and pockets. An increased cost of living, a set income and the lack of a financial safety net lead a lot of people into deepening debt. Paying off every month gives a revolving line of credit, which is very useful. It is remarkable that major initiatives in the field of electronic historical editions — such as the Model Editions Partnership in the United States — in fact have as their goal to maintain general editorial principles in a new electronic environment. [17] In an illustrative prospectus on this cooperative link between seven American documentary editions, which include the The Papers of Henry Laurens and the Lincoln Papers. different combinations are outlined of texts, scholarly commentaries such as annotations and images of documents as models for future source editions. The authors elaborate in particular on the opportunity to enrich and expand documentary editions example of term paper for college, by for example using the possibility of offering different versions of a text — forms of transcribing; variants in the text — simultanuously, whereby the user is left with the choice of deciding what he or she wishes to appear on the screen. Also the possibility to sort documents according to the researcher's request — chronological or thematic — and to provide access to different types of annotated levels has been advocated. In this approach it is the refinement of the scholarly apparatus which enhances the possibilities to take advantage of the needs of different target-groups that is seen as the great gain in the electronic editing of historical sources. 6. For instance M-J. Kline, A Guide to Documentary Editing (Baltimore 1987, second rev. ed. 1988). Specialized journals: Documentary editing, published by the Association for Documentary Editing; Editio. International yearbook of scholarly editing. An attempt to solve this problem was made by means of an edition. [12] Between 1915 and 1994 our institute published a total of 21 volumes with summaries of the resolutions concerning the years 1579 up to and including 1624. Furthermore, references and annotations were made in this edition. But it would have been unattainable and irresponsible to continue with this policy without adapting it. The years 1625 up to and including 1651 comprise approximately 42,000 pages of text and would require approximately 60 years' work of an editor: an unrealistic perspective considering the means available. Applying strict selection criteria to reduce the size was not a serious option: this would have adversely affected the principle of 'comprehensiveness'. This is why three options were formulated each one of which was intended, with the help of information technology, to provide access to this gigantic source: 1) the compilation of an index of names of individuals, places and subjects that are mentioned in the resolutions linked to images of the original source together with an electronic search option; 2) the compilation of summaries of the resolutions in modern Dutch. The summaries should be searchable with the aid of a text-retrieval programme; 3) to make a transcription of the seventeenth century text. The transcription should be made searchable with the help of a text-retrieval programme. The Dutch Republic, which has been mentioned above, was a federal state consisting of seven highly sovereign states or provinces. The whole country was united by a few general governing bodies, of which the States General was the most important. All seven states were represented in this body. The authority of the States General lay in the area of executing foreign politics, deciding on matters of war and peace, defending the Dutch Republic at sea and on land, and monitoring the Dutch East Indies and West Indies Companies. New Netherland, the area along the Hudson River and the Delaware River, that was under Dutch control until 1664 and afterwards for a short time until 1674 when it fell definitively in British hands, was formally governed by this States General. Access to their resolutions is only available from 1651 onwards by means of a contemporary index in the first years and later publication of the resolutions. Up until 1651 there is no way to access the contents of this important historical source. Should the editor of a text not wish to demand too high a level of familiarity with the historical source on the part of the user, further assistance can be offered. First of all, a series of search options can be prepared, by means of several examples or as a systematic processing of the text. In this way, it could be indicated beforehand how to search in the resolutions of the seventeenth century States General for passages on, for example, how the army was financed. The more systematic the help that is offered to the user, for example by linking key words to concrete words in the text, the closer the resemblance to a conventional index, and the less time is gained in developing a source edition. A second solution is to attach a list of synonyms and preferably a thesaurus, in which the relationships between words from a certain category are set out, such as the relationship that could exist between the example mentioned above under 'poor house' and 'social welfare'. The problem is in fact that such lists of synonyms and thesauri exist for modern, but not for older forms of the language, and in any case not for Dutch. The editor would therefore have to create it himself. Such a task would be extremely useful and would be of great importance for everyone researching older texts, but it would also be a difficult, extensive and perhaps even impossible task. To summarize this paper in only a few words: the suggestion made here is that electronic historical editions can be developed within the current scholarly principles and standards cover letter o covering letter, can enhance the effectiveness of the disclosure of vast quantities of source material and perhaps even increase the efficiency of the editorial process. Each one of the three possibilities offers, in its own right english grammar essay test, a method to reduce the amount of work involved in disclosing 42,000 pages of text of the seventeenth century States General. Each option also gives an added value measured against criteria such as the efficiency of the work process and the effectiveness for the user. The first option — just an index together with an electronic search tool — offers access, but creates a great distance with the source, even if images of the source were added. The subjectivity of the individual preparing the index dissertation research writing, no matter how limited this might be thanks to, for example, guidelines, will never be completely satisfy the user who will therefore often wish to consult the source independently. The compilation of an index for this immense source is moreover, time-consuming and perhaps not so motivating for the persons who have to carry out the task and is therefore perhaps not the most preferable choice. The second option, the compilation of summaries with the aim of being able to consult them with the help of a text-retrieval programme, provides considerably more information for the user than the first-mentioned choice. Here too, subjectivity plays a role. The editor of the summaries can strive to maintain a substantial standardization for the use of words and meanings to make the text-retrieval programme as easy as possible to use. The third possibility brings the user closest to the source, but history essay proposal examples, as has been explained in great detail above help with writing my descriptive essay, the use of text-retrieval on transcriptions of seventeenth-century texts is by no means straightforward. One could suppose that this third option would without any doubt be the most time-saving and therefore the most efficient one (transcripts can be made by less trained and less expensive personnel while the editor would supervise the whole process), but the least effective for the user and could saddle him or her with a lot of work and bother. But in each of the three options, it should be stressed personal essay topics for higher, great care is taken to adhere as far as possible to the scholarly principles unique to historical editing. The text is disclosed in its entirety so that no refuge is sought in a constantly subjective selection within the historical source in order to save time. Furthermore, in every option an attempt is made to develop general access to the source. 3. G.G. Iggers, Historiography in the twentieth century. From scientific objectivity to the postmodern challenge (Hannover, Londen 1997). From this correspondence to and from William of Orange, approximately 3,500 letters were edited and published thirty years ago and were therefore known. Because it was patently obvious that the actual number must be far greater, our institute decided to establish a new research project [9]. The prospect of a text edition in printed format containing thousands of letters, often written in illegible handwriting, did not bear thinking about. This is why an inventory was decided upon rather than a full text edition. Archival research produced a harvest of approximately 10,000 letters write an essay sample, collected from about 80 archives in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Germany, Poland, Denmark and Great Britain. Key points have been made about each and every letter found: the name of the correspondent and the recipient, the date, the status of the letter (e.g. draft, original, etc.) case studies in science and ethics, the archive where it is stored and a transcription of the first line (so that it can be recognized during an archival search). We could have left it at that, however, to further enhance the information, it was decided to add to each letter a brief description of its contents and any additional comments with regard to the letter. The plan was to publish the list of the 10,000 letters drawn up in this manner, altogether amounting to more than 2000 printed pages. To make this information accessible to the user an index of names and subjects would be added. The edition and publication of historical documents became a profession in its own right during the nineteenth century, just as the whole of historical science was going through a process of professionalization. History became a science. The quest for historical facts with the help of text critical rules had to contribute to 'objective' knowledge. Critical use of sources became the basis of this new approach. Consequently, there was a demand for reliable texts and free cv templates and cover letters, with an eye to the publication of sources, institutes were established and magnificent, bulky series of source editions came to light. The British historian, David Knowles, spoke of 'great historical enterprises' [1]. In Germany, the Monumenta historiae germanica. a series of documentary editions on medieval German history, set the example in 1819. Other series followed, such as the Rolls Series in England, the Collection des documents inédites sur l'histoire de France in France and the Colección de documentos inéditos para la historia de España in Spain. In The Netherlands, the Dutch government established a commission in 1902, now an institute, to publish the Rijks Geschiedkundige Publicatiën (State's Historical Publications) sample essay of process essay, a series of historical editions that currently comprises almost 400 volumes [2] . Let me draw some conclusions. Historical editing has a long history and has been practised professionnaly since the nineteenth century. Research of sources and critical use of sources remain characteristics of the profession even in the considerably changed practice of history in the twentieth century. Documentary editions offer a helping hand to the researcher and the editors of documents have developed rules to satisfy the demands of source criticism. The application of computer technology offers, in this respect, excellent opportunities. Particular attention has been paid above to the disclosure of massive historical sources counting tens of thousands of pages of archival material. Three methods have been discussed: providing information about historical documents instead of editing them together with electronic search tools; applying electronic text-retrieval possibilities in running text; integrating images of the original documents in a source edition. It may be clear that these new approaches bring about great changes in historical editing. But these changes do not primarily involve the scholarly principles that form the very foundation of the editorial practice. In the examples mentioned, these principles still form the basis for an edition. William of Orange is one of the most important figures in Dutch and early modern European history. The American historian, John Lothrop Motley made him into a hero in the nineteenth century in his book entitled The Rise of the Dutch Republic. Born into the aristocracy (prince of Orange, count of Nassau etc.) and residing in the Netherlands that belonged to the kingdom of Spain, he led the Dutch Revolt against Philip II, the Habsburg King of Spain. The matters of contention lay in the field of government and religion, inasmuch as William of Orange defended provincial and local liberties and a tolerant religious attitude against the centralism and fanatical catholicism of the Spanish monarch. In order to protect the tiny Netherlands against the mighty Spanish kingdom, William of Orange attempted to win many foreign sovereigns over to his side including Queen Elizabeth I of England and the protestant German princes. To accomplish this he engaged in an extremely lengthy correspondence. In fact he discussed the issues concerning the Dutch Revolt not only with foreign sovereigns, but also with countless local figures of authority. This is why his correspondence is of such great importance to our understanding of the European relationships, the development of modern states, the financing of wars and the birth of a republic — the Dutch Republic — in a Europe of kings. In 1584 his life ended prematurely when he was the victim of a murder, masterminded by Spain. It is difficult to offer a comprehensive explanation for the growing trend of marital breakdown; and it is even more difficult to find solutions that might ameliorate the problems created by it. Clearly though cover letter for faxing resume, as I have argued in this essay, the most useful answers are to be found not within a narrow legal framework, but within a broader socio-economic one. The remainder of this essay writing tutorial is based on a short sample 'divorce essay' (about 1 research paper is,000 words). Australian Bureau of Statistics (1996). Divorces, Australia. Canberra: Australian Government Printing Service. One type of explanation for rising divorce has focused on changes in laws relating to marriage. For example, Bilton, Bonnett and Jones (1987) argue that increased rates of divorce do not necessarily indicate that families are now more unstable. It is possible, they claim, that there has always been a degree of marital instability. They suggest that changes in the law have been significant, because they have provided unhappily married couples with 'access to a legal solution to pre-existent marital problems' (p.301). Bilton et al. therefore believe that changes in divorce rates can be best explained in terms of changes in the legal system. The problem with this type of explanation however, is that it does not consider why these laws have changed in the first place. It could be argued that reforms to family law, as well as the increased rate of divorce that has accompanied them, are the product of more fundamental changes in society. It's best to leave yourself ample time to write and revise the essay, ideally giving yourself time for a break between drafts. If you're approaching a deadline, however, you may need to make the best use of the time you have. The principle purpose of the introduction is to present your position (this is also known as the "thesis" or "argument") on the issue at hand but effective introductory paragraphs are so much more than that. Before you even get to this thesis statement assignment help for students, for example, the essay should begin with a "hook" that grabs the reader’s attention and makes them want to read on. Examples of effective hooks include relevant quotations ("no man is an island") or surprising statistics ("three out of four doctors report that…"). Active voice, wherein the subjects direct actions rather than let the actions "happen to" them – "he scored a 97%" instead of "he was given a 97%" – is a much more powerful and attention-grabbing way to write. At the same time, unless it is a personal narrative, avoid personal pronouns like I, My, or Me. Try instead to be more general and you will have your reader hooked. A one sentence body paragraph that simply cites the example of "George Washington" or "LeBron James" is not enough, however.
