This character insight is one of the simplest things for a novelist to do. You just need to remember that your protagonist has a rich inner world - and you need to tell us about it. Not just the bland everyday things either ("Mike felt hungry so he sat down to eat"), but the things that make him different and unique. Get more inner worldy advice . Children flocked to Harry Potter for JK Rowling's ideas and inventiveness, but they stayed with her because of her warmth. Follow her example! Ulfor saw the descending sword only in a blur of silver and black against the sky. He swivelled his shoulder in an effort to escape, hoping that the armour on his back would guide the blade harmlessly away. But the swordsman above, a swarthy little troll with yellow teeth and a spitting grin, was too fast, too agile. Long after a reader has forgotten the details of a plot, the chances are they'll remember the character who impelled it. The two things you absolutely have to bear in mind when constructing your characters are: OK, we know this sounds obvious, but it's no good having a fab idea and a brilliant plot if you can't write good, clear English. Your book is made up of sentences and if those sentences don't convey your meaning succinctly and clearly your book just won't work. Fortunately, almost everyone has the capacity to write well enough: you just have to focus on the challenge. In particular, do think about the three building blocks of good writing: If you’ve been thinking about writing a book, you already know the advantages of being a published author… You see, I know how to make things happen: for more than a dozen years, I taught and coached others how to achieve their goals, and I’ve been a goal-setter myself for as long as I can remember. In January 2009, “Write a book” was my top goal for the year, and that goal became a reality before the year was over. If you’re like most Americans – 80 percent according to recent surveys – you feel you’ve got a book in you. Being part of a writers group has helped me understand that there are many ways to move a story forward. I found it helpful to find a mentor – someone who gives me honest feedback and gently reminds me they haven’t seen anything recently. I too found Scrivener to be an excellent tool! It is always open on my computer as I start the day. A visual reminder there is work to be done. ohhh my dear, sorry for your abusive relationship, that lucky boy might not understand value of a piece of gold like you. and thanks very much for remarkable writing, it really made my day. Amber Bowen says: Trish O’Connor I still don’t have the daily eight hours Stephen King thinks I should have, but he’s right about one thing: Dedicating the time and energy into writing every day is the only way to get your story on paper. Thanks in advance, Ricky It’s so funny, I had never considered changing names until I was in the final draft as I worried it would distance me too much. Part of the reason I love to write is that it connects me with old emotions and helps me process and write them as honestly as possible. I was at my friend’s birthday party and Tom was sitting across from me. Someone dared us to kiss. I blushed. Tom leaned forward. I like that idea Bettye. I found I was having the same issue and even stopped working with my book coach and did not pitch an editor who was considering me for a column. However, having had some essays published recently has helped. My issues boiled down to fear. It is your life out there for the world to judge. Handling a few internet trolls is going to help me deal with criticism when my book is published. Hi, I really enjoyed this and all the comments and replies were also very helpful. I have a couple of questions or concerns really, that I was hoping some of you could help me with. Like all writers, I’m a rabid reader, devouring anything from bestsellers to crime to nonfiction to fantasy to YA to obscure self-published novels. And while I’ve been writing for the entirety of my life, I know nothing about writing a book. David STEVENS says: Three months ago I started writing a memoir . These are priceless tips for writer beginners like me. Thanks for sharing. Ricky Gill says: I do love to write my life story. I believe it is going to be very inspiring for others and to learn a lesson to how to create a happy life. It has lot of personal details which are very heartbreaking. I do like to write and publish this story. Hi Rudo, did you finally write your book? I’m a Zimbabwean woman too and would like to write a book about my life story. And that’s when the magic happened. Copying other writers only lasted a few minutes before I found myself mid-rampage, tearing through my story, able to tap into my own style. Im suzan from uganda this has inspired me,i have longed to write a book about my life but would always fail.i have never writen any articles apart from my exams probably ranked myself a failure in that field, i know i have an inspiring story that can help someone out there but i do not know how to state it, sometimes im seeing it being acted but in dreams wishing it was true. All my freinds have told to tell it to the world but i do not know can help. I hate this advice because it’s like love — you’ll know it when you find it — but it’s impossible to anticipate. That said, I took a memoir-writing class while working on one story in particular. I shared it with the class ,and after the critique I realized it worked both as a chapter in my memoir as well as a stand-alone personal essay . So what if I just copied someone else? Just to try? Keep up your explorations and experiments – but never forget to walk the dog (my dogs and I are helping walk him for you now so you are off the hook on that one.) ? Thank you, Marian how to write a 6 sat essay, for your very helpful and practical advice. I’m currently trying to write a memoir. I found the answer to a stumbling block I had. I’m a very private person and found writing about my thoughts and feelings for anonymous readers was troubling. So much so that it slowed down my writing. I found a very simple device that has solved the problem. I chose another name for myself and wrote in the third person. I was amazed at how much more smoothly my woods flowed when I was not aware I was speaking about my own experiences. “Do I start at the beginning of the story and end at the end? Should the book be a series of flashbacks? Do I write the last page first? Do I outline? Do I transcribe my journals? Or do I just sit down and start with whatever comes out?” Bettye I like your idea of a pen name and writing in as the third person. I too have found it difficult to write my story and found that I stumbled on my words even though I had already done a lot of work and wrote out the main outline Scrivener. I will try your idea and see what happens. Thanks for sharing As Carrie Lynn Lewis mentioned in the comments, there is no ONE particular way that works universally. That’s part of what makes the process so difficult to start yet so exhilarating once you’ve written something. Doing this has given me two surprising benefits: However, I recently submitted a personal essay to an anthology and changed the name of my “characters” halfway through the editing process. It was INASNE how much it changed my perspective. The whole ending shifted and it’s a much better essay because of it. I love this advice and will definitely be using it from now on! So I took a break from working on the book and have spent almost two months perfecting this one essay. I hired an editor and have a big hairy dream of getting it published in the holy grail of personal essays, Modern Love . Great piece! Yes, each of us has to find our own way, exploring and experimenting. I started out with Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg, began daily writing for a half hour, then a JC course in creative writing thinking I wanted to be a nature writer. Came out of the course a poet. Dabbled in that for years, continuing to read anything and everything about writing, nature writing and then memoir. Love Stephen King’s book, and Ann Lamott as well. Suddenly my ten year old inner child began writing her memoir. Loving playing with that, and interestingly, the latest version is written as poetry. I continue my half hour daily writing and another memoir seems to be appearing on the pages. I would be lost without my writing! Listening to your story, I want to hear you begin with your birth, jump forward and then flash back to your parents. Though this is not my personal preference this is the feeling I got from reading what you wrote, so perhaps it will mean something to you. Oh my God, I can’t even. Someone shoot me. I should definitely never write books and should probably just push papers for the rest of forever. Elizabeth Gilbert starts her bestseller, “I wish Giovanni would kiss me. Oh, but there are so many reasons why this would be a terrible idea. To begin with, Giovanni is ten years younger than I am, and — like most Italian guys in their twenties — he still lives with his mother.” Randy Ingermanson, Ph.D. Available in paper and in e-book. Our fundamental question is this: How do you design a novel? Step 7) Take another week and expand your character descriptions into full-fledged character charts detailing everything there is to know about each character. The standard stuff such as birthdate, description, history, motivation, goal, etc. Most importantly, how will this character change by the end of the novel? This is an expansion of your work in step (3), and it will teach you a lot about your characters. You will probably go back and revise steps (1-6) as your characters become “real” to you and begin making petulant demands on the story. This is good — great fiction is character-driven. Take as much time as you need to do this, because you’re just saving time downstream. When you have finished this process example of a term paper outline, (and it may take a full month of solid effort to get here), you have most of what you need to write a proposal. If you are a published novelist international law essays, then you can write a proposal now and sell your novel before you write it. If you’re not yet published, then you’ll need to write your entire novel first before you can sell it. No, that’s not fair, but life isn’t fair and the world of fiction writing is especially unfair. Step 4) By this stage essay on the holocaust, you should have a good idea of the large-scale structure of your novel, and you have only spent a day or two. Well, truthfully, you may have spent as much as a week check job application status letter, but it doesn’t matter. If the story is broken, you know it now, rather than after investing 500 hours in a rambling first draft. So now just keep growing the story. Take several hours and expand each sentence of your summary paragraph into a full paragraph. All but the last paragraph should end in a disaster. The final paragraph should tell how the book ends. Another important point: It doesn’t have to be perfect. The purpose of each step in the design process is to advance you to the next step. Keep your forward momentum! You can always come back later and fix it when you understand the story better. You will do this too history of research paper, unless you’re a lot smarter than I am. Randy's book is the best-selling book in the Fiction Writing Reference category on Amazon. It's also the highest-rated book in that category. And the "most wished for" book. Grab your copy here on B&N. (Nook or paper) An important point: You may find that you need to go back and revise your one-sentence summary and/or your one-paragraph summary. Go ahead! This is good–it means your characters are teaching you things about your story. It’s always okay at any stage of the design process to go back and revise earlier stages. In fact, it’s not just okay–it’s inevitable. And it’s good. Any revisions you make now are revisions you won’t need to make later on to a clunky 400 page manuscript. I claim that that’s how you design a novel — you start small, then build stuff up until it looks like a story. Part of this is creative work, and I can’t teach you how to do that. Not here a website to type an essay, anyway. But part of the work is just managing your creativity — getting it organized into a well-structured novel. That’s what I’d like to teach you here. Good fiction doesn’t just happen, it is designed. You can do the design work before or after you write your novel. I’ve done it both ways and I strongly believe that doing it first is quicker and leads to a better result. Design is hard work, so it’s important to find a guiding principle early on. This article will give you a powerful metaphor to guide your design. This article is immensely popular and has been translated into several languages: Randy is known around the world as "the Snowflake Guy" for his wildly popular Snowflake method of designing a novel. If you know of other translations, please let me know about them on my Contact page. Translators: If you’d like permission to do a translation, email me on my Contact Page so I can include a link to your translation here. About midway through a first draft, I usually take a breather and fix all the broken parts of my design documents. Yes essay about my name, the design documents are not perfect. That’s okay. The design documents are not fixed in concrete, they are a living set of documents that grows as you develop your novel. If you are doing your job right, at the end of the first draft you will laugh at what an amateurish piece of junk your original design documents were. And you’ll be thrilled at how deep your story has become. Step 1) Take an hour and write a one-sentence summary of your novel. Something like this: “A rogue physicist travels back in time to kill the apostle Paul.” (This is the summary for my first novel, Transgression.) The sentence will serve you forever as a ten-second selling tool. This is the big picture, the analog of that big starting triangle in the snowflake picture. You can also use this paragraph in your proposal. Ideally, your paragraph will have about five sentences. One sentence to give me the backdrop and story setup. Then one sentence each for your three disasters. Then one more sentence to tell the ending. Don’t confuse this paragraph with the back-cover copy for your book. This paragraph summarizes the whole story. Your back-cover copy should summarize only about the first quarter of the story. Step 5) Take a day or two and write up a one-page description of each major character and a half-page description of the other important characters. These “character synopses” should tell the story from the point of view of each character. As always, feel free to cycle back to the earlier steps and make revisions as you learn cool stuff about your characters. I usually enjoy this step the most and lately, I have been putting the resulting “character synopses” into my proposals instead of a plot-based synopsis. Editors love character synopses, because editors love character-based fiction. Step 9) (Optional. I don’t do this step anymore.) Switch back to your word processor and begin writing a narrative description of the story. Take each line of the spreadsheet and expand it to a multi-paragraph description of the scene. Put in any cool lines of dialogue you think of, and sketch out the essential conflict of that scene. If there’s no conflict, you’ll know it here and you should either add conflict or scrub the scene.
